Treat yourself to a mental health day:
A mental health day allows you to escape the daily mish-mash of life on the female track -- an overloaded calendar, family members and co-workers who feel that they can't function without you, and a phone that seems to never stop ringing.

Instead of responding to everyone else, take a day off from life and pamper yourself. Dr. Susan Corso, a spiritual therapist in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and author of God's Dictionary recommends silence.

"Our world is so full of images and sounds coming toward us that we cannot listen to ourselves from within. Silence allows us to hear who we really are from the inside out," Corso says.

"It's crucial for women to take a break from responsibility and give themselves at least a day every couple of months to completely indulge in whatever they fancy -- a massage, a day at the spa, a picnic in an area with beautiful surroundings, a long leisurely bike ride or even a day in bed with popcorn and videos," says Debra Mandel, PhD, a Los Angeles based psychologist and author of Healing the Sensitive Heart.

Most importantly, to benefit from this time of solitude, a woman must enjoy her pleasure without guilt so the experience really fills up the empty container.

Instead of the usual soak in the tub with aromatherapy candles, here are ways to take time off when you don't have the time or money for a day spa:

  • Schedule a day off from the office while everyone else in the household reports to school or work.

  • Go shopping by yourself and browse in the stores of your choice as long as you desire.

  • Treat yourself to lunch at your favorite cafe. Then purchase a novel from your wish list and indulge in the novel at a park.

  • Go to the library and write letters to all the friends and family members who haven't heard from you recently.

  • Look at pictures of your family, friends and vacations from the past two decades and reminisce.

  • Unplug the phone and daydream. Recollect your childhood friends, the teachers who made a lasting impact in your life, and any other happy thoughts.

  • Purchase three of your favorite magazines, prop up in bed with fluffy pillows, scented candles and a cup of your favorite tea.

  • Have a P.J. day. You don't have to get dressed for bed.
